What is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is a discipline of dentistry that focuses on tooth misalignment. Bite issues might occur as a result of dental irregularities in some patients, while others battle with jaw issues. Orthodontists help correct improper bites, so that you can retain and maintain your teeth for life.

Why Should I See An Orthodontist?

There are several compelling reasons why you should consult an orthodontist rather than a regular dentist.

Most significantly, an orthodontist can realign your teeth, improving their function and preventing them from wearing out. When properly maintained, functioning bites can last a lifetime.

If you are self-conscious about your smile, an orthodontist is equipped to develop a very successful treatment plan that results in a more beautiful, and healthy grin. At St. Andrew Street Dental Practice, our dentists provide orthodontic treatment using the Invisalign system. For complex orthodontic needs, we have established great working relationships with local orthodontists for any required referrals.

What Types of Issues Do Orthodontics Address?

We are devoted to providing you with not just a beautiful smile, but also a functional bite. Straight teeth are not always indicative of a healthy bite. Without appropriate function, you may be prone to future risks, such as dental decay, excessive wear, gum disease and even tooth loss.

Here are some of the common problems we see that can be helped with orthodontic treatment.

Overbite

An overbite occurs when the top and bottom front teeth overlap vertically. This can result in abnormal wear on the front teeth, which will wear through the enamel, exposing the inner layers of your teeth and causing discomfort. Establishing a functioning bite will avert these potential complications.

Underbite

An underbite occurs when the lower teeth overlap the upper teeth. Because an underbite can impair jaw growth, it is critical to correct it early. This is an excellent incentive to bring children in for a free evaluation before they reach the age of seven.

Crooked Teeth / Crowding

Crooked teeth are more difficult to clean efficiently, posing a risk to your tooth's health.Crowding occurs when teeth do not have enough room to fit comfortably in the jaw. Adult teeth are naturally bigger than baby teeth and may compete for space, obstructing their alignment.

Spacing

Spacing can be caused by a variety of factors, including a mismatch between the size of the teeth and the size of the jaw, missing teeth and excess gum tissue. Too much room may wreak havoc on dental hygiene, gum health, biting function and aesthetics.

What Are the Options to Straighten My Teeth?

Each smile, each set of teeth and each circumstance is unique. Here are some of the options to straighten your teeth and improve your bite.

Fixed Braces

Fixed braces are suggested for severe cases of tooth misalignment. This type of braces produce results more quickly than removable braces. Fixed braces allow for precise tooth movement, resulting in more effective and long-lasting effects. Metal, glass and ceramic brackets are available to suit any budget.

Removable Braces

Removable braces are transparent plastic trays that snap into and out of your mouth to address orthodontic issues. Removable braces are often used to correct minor tooth alignment problems. They are convenient to use since they can be removed when eating and brushing. They may be a viable solution for treating front tooth issues.

Invisalign

Invisalign straightens your teeth by using removable, transparent aligners created from computer-generated images and impressions of your mouth. While a conventional brace uses fixed wires to "pull" the teeth into alignment, Invisalign uses a succession of moulds to gradually press your teeth into their new and better position over a period of months.

Discreetly Straighten Your Teeth with Invisalign

Invisalign is the only orthodontic treatment we provide at St. Andrew Street Dental Practice. Our team of dentists work with Invisalign to provide you with an easy-to-use tooth straightening system that’s practically invisible.
Starting with impressions, X-rays, and an in-practice assessment, we can determine if you are a candidate for Invisalign. We send the details over to the Invisalign laboratory, and they use the information to develop your bespoke treatment plan.

Using high-end dental technology, they provide us with a visual that shows exactly how your teeth will move using Invisalign, and approximately how long treatment will take. We will show you on screen what the result will look like, and if you are ready, we will order your custom-made plastic trays.

Invisalign sends us your series of trays, and you can come and pick them up once they arrive. Unlike traditional braces that are placed and removed by a dentist, the Invisalign aligner trays can be put in and taken out whenever you need to eat, drink or clean your teeth and gums. Best of all, you can continue eating your favourite foods and keep up with your established teeth cleaning routine.

You need to wear the aligner trays for about 22 hours per day, and swap out your tray for the next one in the sequence on a regular interval. We will have you come by our dental practice every couple of months, so we can track your progress.

In as little as a few weeks, you will start to see changes in your smile. Average treatment times for Invisalign patients range between 12 and 18 months.

How Do I Care For My Braces?

Maintaining proper dental hygiene is critical at any age; it becomes even more so when wearing braces, as they provide places for food to stick and bacteria to lurk. We recommend brushing your teeth three times a day and flossing once a day, and if you are unable to do so at school or at work, you should schedule time for cleaning when you get home.

If you have difficulty keeping your teeth clean, contact us to learn about additional tactics that could help. When you come in for check-ups or adjustments, our assistants will inform you of your oral hygiene status. Additionally, if you are concerned that your braces have been damaged, do not panic; this is most likely not a life-threatening situation. Repairs can be scheduled through your orthodontist’s office.

How Long Do I Have To Wear Braces?

Orthodontic treatment duration varies, and depends on a number of factors, including your age, the manner of treatment and the severity of your condition. You are a critical component of a successful therapy! The more involved and diligent you are in your therapy, the more effective it will be. Receiving early treatment can also assist in shortening the duration of treatment for youth.

Prior to initiating orthodontic treatment, your orthodontist will review all of your options and offer an estimate for the length of time required to complete treatment. Orthodontic treatment periods range from 6 to 30 months, although the majority of conventional treatments take approximately 22 months.

Feel free to book an appointment with our clinic and we can provide further information about Invisalign treatment or refer you to a trusted orthodontist specialist in our network.
